Reena’s Response to Recent Events in the Community
In the wake of the recent demonstration that unfolded in front of Aish Hatorah Toronto in Thornhill that subsequently spread to the vicinity of the Toby and Henry Battle Developmental Centre and our Lou Fruitman Reena Residence, we wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Reena staff, our partner agencies, and York Regional Police. Their commitment and hard work in ensuring the safety and security of our supported individuals, staff and families during these challenging times cannot be overstated.
On Saturday evening, upon learning of the unfolding demonstration, Reena took immediate action. We altered our programming schedule to ensure the continued safety and well-being of our community members. Additionally, we increased security measures and worked closely with York Regional Police to safeguard all those within our premises and in the surrounding area. These steps were taken with the utmost urgency and care, reflecting our commitment to the safety and security of our community.
However, it is with deep concern and disappointment that we address the actions of protesters. While the right to free speech is a foundational pillar of our society, using this privilege to incite fear, intolerance, and targeting local community spaces including residences for individuals with disabilities in York Region, is both unacceptable and condemnable. The essence of our community lies in its diversity and the collective efforts to foster an environment of inclusivity, respect, and understanding.
We understand the importance of dialogue and the power of communication in bridging divides. Let us put down the megaphone and pick up the telephone. Let us exchange ideas and perspectives in a way that fosters mutual respect and understanding. It’s time to move beyond public demonstrations and toward meaningful discourse that can lead to positive change.
We would like to thank leadership from all levels of government for their calls of support and concern.
We look forward to opening a new chapter of dialogue and understanding.
