Today, May 23rd, 2024, both Logan Kanapathi, MPP Markham Thornhill, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Children, Community and Social Services and Dave Smith, MPP Peterborough-Kawartha, Parliamentary Assistant to the Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, congratulated Reena and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) for the completion of the renovation of two of Reena’s homes – dedicated to supporting individuals’ return to the community.
“It is with great pride that we announce the completion of these homes,” said Sandy Stemp COO of Reena. “This project represents a pivotal step in our mission to provide comprehensive and supportive community living options for some of our most vulnerable residents.”
“Partners like Reena are key to helping Ontario build a more responsive and inclusive developmental services system for people living with developmental disabilities,” said Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services. “Rebuilding these two homes will help ensure individuals receive the care they need to succeed and thrive as they transition to community settings.”
The homes located in the Willowdale Riding and the York Centre Riding will be officially ready on Monday, May 27, 2024.
Reena and CAMH, with the support of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) developed an innovative joint program aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals transitioning from Alternative Level of Care (ALC) to community living. This program provides holistic and comprehensive care for adults with dual diagnosis (DD), individuals with developmental disabilities (DD), and complex mental health needs.
Since 2021, MCCSS has partnered with the MoH on a targeted initiative to transition these individuals from hospital beds to community placements. The initiative addresses barriers such as complexity, availability, and cost of supports.
In 2022, Reena successfully transitioned and continues to support two DD ALC individuals in the community. In 2023, planning commenced to transition seven more individuals from CAMH to community placements through a collective approach. To ensure these transitions are successful, Reena has partnered with Surrey Place to create a “Specialized DD Care Team,” providing the necessary clinical supports post-discharge.
The partnership between CAMH and Reena has been highly effective, increasing knowledge and collaboration between the developmental services sector and the health sector. This initiative exemplifies the positive impact that can be achieved through strong inter-ministerial collaboration.
